Where serious passion meets serious fun.
If your teen is the one with showtunes on repeat, the one who can't stop quoting their favourite musical, or the one who quietly (or loudly) dreams of being on stage, Upbeat Up-and-Comers is the class for them. A musical theatre class for 12 to 16 year olds in Palmyra, Perth, where acting, singing and dancing come together each week, leading to a brilliant end of year musical production.
Upbeat Up-and-Comers is our most advanced musical theatre class, designed for young performers aged 12 to 16 in Palmyra, Perth. With a longer two hour class, our oldest students have space to dive deep into performance, refine their craft, and grow alongside a group who genuinely love being there each week.
Class by class, students develop their acting, singing and dancing through scene work, song studies, choreography, character development and ensemble exercises. They'll learn how to break down a script, find a character's voice, hold a stage, and work as a true cast. Friendships at this age run deep, and many of our students describe Upbeat as the most fun part of their week.
At Evoke, we draw on the principles of psychology to shape every class. From the way we plan, to how we group students, to how we celebrate progress, everything is designed with your teen's whole wellbeing in mind, not just their performance skills. For young people navigating the teenage years, a creative space like this can be genuinely powerful.
At the end of the year, the Upbeat class performs their very own full musical on a real theatre stage with costumes, lights and an audience. It's a brilliant bonus to everything they've explored across the year, and a real production experience our students remember for years.
The questions parents ask most often about Upbeat Up-and-Comers, answered honestly by Kate.
What does a typical Upbeat Up-and-Comers class look like?
Each two hour class is built to be energetic, creative and challenging in the best way. We start with warm ups and a check in together, then move into acting, singing and dancing. Class to class, we explore a mix of scene work, character development, songs, and choreography. Sometimes the material connects to our end of year musical, sometimes it's just for the love of the craft. There's space for laughter, expression, and real skill building, and students leave proud of what they've achieved together.
Kate, OwnerWhat if my teen is joining when other students have been there for years?
At Evoke, our classes grow alongside the students. Once your teen joins a class, they stay with that same group of friends as the class ages up year after year. Upbeat is our most established class, made up of students who have grown together through performing arts. New students are warmly welcomed, and the existing group is excellent at making newcomers feel like part of the family from day one.
Kate, OwnerMy teen is brand new to performing arts. Will they fit in?
Yes, absolutely. We design every class to have multiple ways in, so experienced performers can stretch themselves while newer students can take part at their own pace. New students often bring fresh energy and a new perspective, and the rest of the cast quickly makes them feel part of the group. The shared passion for performing arts is the great connector.
Kate, OwnerMy teen isn't confident with singing. Is this class still for them?
Absolutely. Our musical theatre classes are run from a drama base, where acting, singing and dancing develop together. Many of our students arrive feeling unsure about one piece of the triple threat puzzle and grow in confidence across all three over time. We're not looking for ready-made performers, we're here to help your teen become one.
Kate, OwnerWhat does the end of year production look like?
The Upbeat Up-and-Comers class performs their very own full musical at the end of the year, on a real theatre stage with costumes, lights and an audience. Every student plays a named role, and the script is adapted to the class each year so it suits the group. Auditions take place earlier in the year and full details about the audition process are shared with enrolled families closer to the time.
Kate, OwnerWhat should my child wear and bring to class?
Once enrolled, your child will receive their very own Evoke t-shirt, which is our class uniform and worn to every class and rehearsal. For a trial class, a plain black t-shirt is perfect. Pair the top with black bottoms (shorts, leggings or pants) that they can move easily in. No skirts or dresses please, and a water bottle to bring along. We can't wait to see them in their Evoke gear and watch the excitement they bring to class!

We take care of the re-enrolment hassle, so your teen stays enrolled with us across the whole year. Upbeat Up-and-Comers works on their end of year musical across Terms 3 and 4, with the performance fee charged in Term 3.
