A joyful first taste of singing, dancing and acting.
If your child has ever sung into a hairbrush, danced around the living room, or made up plays with their toys, Bright Beginners might just be their favourite time of the week. A place for 6 to 9 year olds to play, act, sing and dance, and discover the joy of being on stage.
For little ones just starting out, Bright Beginners is so much more than a performing arts class. It's a place where 6 to 9 year olds light up, find their voice, and discover what they're truly capable of.
Each week, students explore acting, singing and dancing through drama games, play based activities and small group work. They'll learn to project their voice, move with confidence, take direction, and most importantly, have a whole lot of fun together. Friendships form quickly, and so does the confidence that carries far beyond the stage!
At Evoke, we draw on the principles of psychology to shape every class. From the way we plan, to how we group students, to how we celebrate progress, everything is designed with your child's whole wellbeing in mind, not just their performance skills.
At the end of the year, students get to share what they've learned in our mini musical, performed on a real stage with costumes, lights and an audience. It's a magical celebration of everything they've explored across the year, and a first taste of the stage families remember for a long time.
The questions parents ask most often about Bright Beginners, answered honestly by Kate.
What does a typical Bright Beginners class look like?
Each class is built to be playful, social and creative. We start with warm ups together, explore acting through play based activities and storytelling, and weave in singing and dancing skills as we go. Some weeks we focus on a song from a musical, other weeks we make up our own scenes, and other weeks we just play. The shape adapts to suit the group, and kids always leave feeling proud of what they've done.
Kate, OwnerMy child is really shy. Will they cope?
Yes! Plenty of our students walked into their first class hiding behind a parent. Bright Beginners moves at each child's pace, so kids who need a little longer to warm up can take their time, while those who are ready to jump in are right at home too. It's amazing to watch every child grow over a term in their own way.
Kate, OwnerMy child is super energetic. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Big energy is welcome here. Musical theatre is a fantastic outlet for kids who feel things deeply or struggle to sit still. We channel that energy into expression, performance and team play. By the end of class, kids leave feeling settled, accomplished and seen.
Kate, OwnerWhat's the difference between Bright Beginners and Developing Dramatics?
Bright Beginners is a musical theatre class, so we bring acting, singing and dancing together. Developing Dramatics focuses purely on drama and acting, with a deeper dive into storytelling, character work and improvisation. Lots of kids do one or the other, and some adventurous ones do both. If you're not sure which suits your child best, send us an email and we'll help you choose.
Kate, OwnerHow do you handle different ability levels in one class?
This is one of the things we love most about teaching this age. We design every activity to have multiple ways in, so confident kids can stretch themselves while quieter or newer kids can take part at their pace. Nobody's ahead or behind here. Every child is just where they're meant to be.
Kate, OwnerWhat should my child wear and bring to class?
Once enrolled, your child will receive their very own Evoke t-shirt, which is our class uniform and worn to every class and rehearsal. For a trial class, a plain black t-shirt is perfect. Pair the top with black bottoms (shorts, leggings or pants) that they can move easily in. No skirts or dresses please, and a water bottle to bring along. We can't wait to see them in their Evoke gear and watch the excitement they bring to class!
Kate, OwnerA shorter, fun-filled production designed to build confidence and introduce performance skills in a supportive and celebratory environment. The perfect first taste of the stage.
We take care of the re-enrolment hassle, so your child stays enrolled with us across the whole year. Bright Beginners work on their end of year mini musical in Term 4, with the performance fee charged then.
Book a free trial class for your child, or jump straight in and enrol for Term 2. Either way, we can't wait to meet you!
