If your child lives for music, can't help breaking into a performance at the dinner table, or has caught the theatre bug after seeing a live show, Funky Freshies might be the class for them. A musical theatre class for 10 to 13 year olds, where acting, singing and dancing come together in a class that performs their own end of year show.
For kids ready to step it up
Funky Freshies is where the love of performing arts gets serious in the most fun way possible. Designed for 10 to 13 year olds, this musical theatre class is about diving deeper, taking on bigger challenges, and discovering just how much your child is capable of.
Each week, students develop their acting, singing and dancing through scene work, song studies, choreography and group activities. They'll grow real performance skills, like working with a script, exploring character depth, building stage confidence and learning to collaborate with their cast. Most importantly, friendships form fast and last well beyond class.
At Evoke, we draw on the principles of psychology to shape every class. From the way we plan, to how we group students, to how we celebrate progress, everything is designed with your child's whole wellbeing in mind, not just their performance skills.
At the end of the year, the Funky Freshies class performs their very own musical on a real stage with costumes, lights and an audience. It's a brilliant bonus to everything we've explored across the year, and a memory that sticks around for years.

A few things worth knowing
- No prior experience needed. Complete beginners are welcome alongside more experienced students.
- Class sizes are designed for this age group, so every student has the chance to shine and make plenty of new friends.
- At this age, we find students thrive when they have space to be themselves without an audience. You'll see all their progress come to life at the end of year musical.
- We always recommend a free trial first, so your child can have a go before committing to a full term.

What does a typical Funky Freshies class look like?
Each class is built to be energetic, creative and supportive. We start with warm ups and a check in together, then dive into acting, singing and dancing depending on what we're working towards. Some weeks we focus on a scene or song from a musical, other weeks we develop original work or choreography. There's plenty of space for creativity and laughter alongside skill building. Students always leave proud of what they've achieved.
Kate, OwnerWhat if my child is joining when other students have been there for years?
At Evoke, our classes grow alongside the students. Once your child joins a class, they stay with that same group of friends as the class ages up year after year. Funky Freshies has its own identity, friendships and journey, and new students are warmly welcomed in at any point. As our older classes graduate, we open up new younger classes to welcome the next group of students in.
Kate, OwnerMy child is brand new to performing arts. Will they keep up?
Absolutely. We design every class to have multiple ways in, so students with experience can stretch themselves while newer students can take part at their pace. The mix of experience levels actually makes the class richer. New students often bring fresh energy and surprise themselves with how quickly they grow.
Kate, OwnerMy child isn't confident with singing. Is this class still for them?
Absolutely. Our musical theatre classes are run from a drama base, where acting, singing and dancing develop together. Many of our students arrive feeling unsure about one piece of the puzzle and grow in confidence across all three over time. We're not looking for ready-made performers, we're here to help your child become one.
Kate, OwnerWhat does the end of year production look like?
The Funky Freshies class performs their very own musical at the end of the year, on a real theatre stage with costumes, lights and an audience. Every student plays a named role, and the script is adapted to the class each year so it suits the group. Auditions take place earlier in the year and full details about the audition process are shared with enrolled families closer to the time.
Kate, OwnerWhat should my child wear and bring to class?
Once enrolled, your child will receive their very own Evoke t-shirt, which is our class uniform and worn to every class and rehearsal. For a trial class, a plain black t-shirt is perfect. Pair the top with black bottoms (shorts, leggings or pants) that they can move easily in. No skirts or dresses please, and a water bottle to bring along. We can't wait to see them in their Evoke gear and watch the excitement they bring to class!

We take care of the re-enrolment hassle, so your child stays enrolled with us across the whole year. Funky Freshies students work on their end of year musical across Terms 3 and 4, with the performance fee charged in Term 3.
