Pure drama play, where imagination takes the lead.
If your child can spend hours inventing worlds, voicing characters, or turning the living room into a stage, Developing Dramatics is going to feel like home. This drama class for 7 to 9 year olds is full of storytelling, character work and creative play.
Developing Dramatics is pure drama play. It's a class designed for 7 to 9 year olds who light up at the chance to act out stories, invent characters, and bring big imaginations to life.
Each week, students dive into storytelling, character work, improvisation and voice through games and group activities. They'll explore different ways to play a role, learn how to listen and react to their scene partners, and try on emotions and accents and silly walks. It's drama at its most joyful and freeing.
At Evoke, we draw on the principles of psychology to shape every class. From the way we plan, to how we group students, to how we celebrate progress, everything is designed with your child's whole wellbeing in mind, not just their performance skills.
At the end of the year, students get to share what they've created in our mini play, performed on a real stage with costumes, lights and an audience. It's a magical celebration of everything they've explored, and a memory that sticks with them.
The questions parents ask most often about Developing Dramatics, answered honestly by Kate.
What does a typical Developing Dramatics class look like?
Each class is built to be playful, imaginative and full of creative exploration. We start with warm ups together, then explore acting through play based activities, storytelling, character work and group games. Some weeks we'll build a scene from scratch, other weeks we'll work with a script, and other weeks we'll dive into improvisation. The shape adapts to suit the group, and kids always leave feeling proud of what they've done.
Kate, OwnerWhat's the difference between drama and musical theatre?
Drama focuses purely on acting, character work, storytelling and improvisation. Musical theatre brings acting, singing and dancing together. Developing Dramatics is for kids who'd love to dive deep into the acting side of performance, without singing or dancing being part of every class. Many kids do drama alongside musical theatre, and they're a fantastic pair.
Kate, OwnerMy child is really shy. Will drama really suit them?
Absolutely. Drama can be incredibly powerful for shy kids because playing a character takes the spotlight off your child and onto the role. It's amazing how a quiet child can voice a bold character, or a worried one can play a hero. Developing Dramatics moves at every child's pace, so kids who need time to warm up can take it, while those who are ready to jump in are right at home too.
Kate, OwnerMy child has a big imagination. Will this stretch them?
Yes! Developing Dramatics is exactly the right space for big imaginations. We channel that creativity into characters, stories and scenes, and we teach the skills that turn raw imagination into compelling performance, such as listening, reacting, voice, body language and improvisation. Kids with big inner worlds absolutely love this class.
Kate, OwnerDoes my child need to be a confident reader?
Not at all. Most of our work at this age is led by play, games and storytelling rather than scripts. When we do use scripts, they're age appropriate and we read them together as a group. So your child can absolutely thrive here regardless of where they are with reading.
Kate, OwnerWhat should my child wear and bring to class?
Once enrolled, your child will receive their very own Evoke t-shirt, which is our class uniform and worn to every class and rehearsal. For a trial class, a plain black t-shirt is perfect. Pair the top with black bottoms (shorts, leggings or pants) that they can move easily in. No skirts or dresses please, and a water bottle to bring along. We can't wait to see them in their Evoke gear and watch the excitement they bring to class!
Kate, OwnerA shorter, fun-filled production designed to build confidence and introduce performance skills in a supportive and celebratory environment. The perfect chance to share everything they've learned.
We take care of the re-enrolment hassle, so your child stays enrolled with us across the whole year. Developing Dramatics students work on their end of year mini play in Term 4, with the performance fee charged then.
Book a free trial class for your child, or jump straight in and enrol for Term 2. Either way, we can't wait to meet you!
